Wow - this is incredibly vivid. I felt like I could feel the heat and see everything you've described with perfect clarity. I love the idea that this gradual settling into the house and cultivating of the garden opens up this awareness in Scully. As she plants and trims, she also unearths things long buried. Terrific. I especially loved this passage:

(Sometimes after Scully has been out in the garden for a long time the heat starts to get to her – edges become shimmery, shapes blurring. The green light under the canopy is like twilight, lighting some things and not others.

Sometimes she thinks the scarecrow moves, bobbing back and forth in no wind at all. Sometimes she thinks she hears William laughing.)
So beautiful, and so brutal at the same time. Made me feel the way I did when I first heard the IWTB line, "if you were a mother, you'd understand." Breaks my heart.
