I've actually changed the ending of a story too, only I was reading to an entire kindergarden class, not just a sibling. It was The Little Mermaid (the Hans Christen Anderson version) and I could not bring myself to tell a room full of four years that the main character died. Plus, I was only TA-ing there for, like, a day...
