Even in the deleted scene, he was more worried that other people didn't think he was important than he was worried that Miranda (you know, his wife) didn't think he was important. It's so obvious he cared more about status (specifically, how Miranda's status affects his) than about Miranda as a person. His fragile male ego meant more to him than his own wife.
